Last month Sen. Jim Bunning of Kentucky held up an unemployment insurance extension because, among other things he couldn't get to watch a college basketball game. This time around it's Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma using the arcane Senate rules to block the extension. Coburn, a doctor, who should know better, gained some notoriety earlier last year when he suggested in a town hall meeting that the uninsured who are ill should rely on charity from neighbors and stop complaining.
On the same bill was an extension to the National Flood Insurance Program. Unfortunately, for thousands of homeowners as well as business owners in Rhode Island and Massachusetts , the have been left without flood insurance just in time for the worst flooding in the state in over 100 years.
The net result is that those affected by the floods will have to sit and wait unteil Sen. Coburn pulls his head out of his ass. When the insurance is reinstated these same people will face mounds of additional paperwork and delays because of Coburn.
