Former GOP Senator: "Republicans have gone overboard"

Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) want to retire in 2012 when he is up for election. He supports signing the START nuclear arms treaty with Russia. Republicans are blocking its passage and attacking Lugar for supporting it. The fact that their hero Reagan signed and supported a similar treaty means nothing for the current reality challenged party.

Expect Lugar to be challenged and probably lose the primary to someone Tea Party idiot in 2012. Former GOP Senator John Danforth, a moderate who would be run out od the party today came to Lugar's defense.

“If Dick Lugar,” said John C. Danforth, a former Republican senator from Missouri, “having served five terms in the U.S. Senate and being the most respected person in the Senate and the leading authority on foreign policy, is seriously challenged by anybody in the Republican Party, we have gone so far overboard that we are beyond redemption.”

Mr. Danforth, who was first elected the same year as Mr. Lugar, added, “I’m glad Lugar’s there and I’m not.”

The military and many elder Republicans such as Brent Scrowcroft and James Baker have come out in support of Lugar and the treaty but this is a bridge too far for the current crop of idiots.

Mike Delph an Indiana state senator who is considing running against Lugar in the primary epitomizes the lunacy saying that Lugar needs "to remember Reagan’s philosophy of Peace through Strength.” He did that by negotiating a treaty with the old Soviet Union that mirrors START. Has anyone told these fools that the Cold War is over and the virtually the entire Soviet bloc has happily embraced capitalism.
