I know that's a little harsh and in the end both he and the Democrats painted themselves into a corner. Support for extending tax cuts for the richest Americans was never popular with the public, even amongst the GOP party faithful but the White House and the Democrats lost control of the narrative.
They should have forced the issue during the window when they the votes in the Senate after Al Franken was seated and before the Scott Brown debacle. By waiting until the last minute in a ;lame duck session before giving up control of the House they were playing with a weak hand.
